This R&D Manager position leads the experimental ion transport and magnetic field calibration testbeds essential for quantum computing development. The role is structured as a player-coach, requiring a balance of hands-on technical contribution, technical leadership, and people management skills. Responsibilities include setting strategic plans, managing programmatic execution, and guiding teams to conceptualize and demonstrate transport and calibration methods for commercial quantum systems.
Key Responsibilities
Establish strategic plans for the team, defining technical scope, milestones, and key decision points.
Manage programmatic execution of plans, including tracking progress, allocating resources, and identifying risks and opportunities.
Lead teams of experimental scientists pushing the frontier of ion transport methods in surface ion traps.
Collaborate with quantum computer architects to derive requirements for ion transport and magnetic field calibration in current and future systems.
Conceptualize, develop, simulate, and demonstrate transport and calibration methods to meet system requirements.
Own the technology portfolio for these technical areas, including intellectual property development and long-term roadmap planning.
Identify staffing needs and provide mentorship, coaching, and career development for direct-report engineers and scientists.
Required Skills
Minimum 8 years of experience in technical research and development.
Minimum 2 years of experience developing or operating atomic, molecular, optical (AMO), or quantum computing (QC) systems.
Minimum 1 year of experience leading an advanced technical team (task leadership or personnel management).
Broad and deep understanding of ion transport.
Broad and deep understanding of atomic, molecular, optical (AMO) physics, or quantum computing.
Nice-to-have Skills
Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
12 or more years of experience in a related technical field.
Direct experience with people management in a technical industry.
Proven expertise in AMO physics or quantum computing.
Experience in complex task management including cost, schedule, and risk management.
