This role is for an Optical Engineering Manager responsible for leading a team of engineers and scientists to support the integration of commercial quantum computers and develop research testbeds. The manager will dedicate the majority of their time to hands-on technical work, including designing, integrating, validating, and troubleshooting optical and laser systems. Additionally, they will manage project requirements, define Statements of Work (SoWs), coordinate with internal teams and suppliers, and hire and develop technical staff.
Key Responsibilities
Lead a team of laser scientists and optical engineers supporting the integration of commercial quantum computers and maintaining research testbeds.
Spend at least 70% of time on direct technical work, including designing, building, integrating, validating, and troubleshooting optical and laser systems.
Mentor staff via hands-on, in-lab troubleshooting and on technical and scientific topics as needed to support project needs.
Gather project requirements, turn them into action plans, and ensure the team completes tasking on time with proper prioritization.
Define Statements of Work (SoWs), support procurement, and track progress of projects and orders to relevant optical and laser suppliers.
Provide technical expertise to optical engineering projects with the goal of maximizing performance and robustness.
Hire, develop, and assess technical staff.
Required Skills
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree.
Minimum 10 years (degree-inclusive) experience designing, developing, building, using and maintaining optical, opto-mechanical, or laser systems.
Minimum 1 year of experience serving as the technical or people leader of an advanced technical team.
Nice-to-have Skills
M.S. or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
Experience leading a team of scientists to complete well-defined projects as well as broader research initiatives.
A demonstrated history of mentoring junior scientists.
Broad understanding of optical principles and practices and intimate knowledge and experience applying this knowledge to projects.
Experience characterizing, stabilizing, and servoing diode, fiber, or Ti:Sapphire lasers.
Experience with quantum information processing or quantum computing.
Experience with the engineering change process.
