The Lead Laser Systems Engineer guides the entire lifecycle of the laser and beamline subsystem for a next-generation quantum computer. This professional serves as the systems engineering liaison between the core architecture team and internal or external laser development teams. Responsibilities include defining and managing subsystem requirements, interfaces, documentation, and verification planning. The role requires expertise in designing cohesive laser systems to ensure on-time delivery and system integration.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the systems engineer for the complex laser subsystem of a trapped-ion quantum computer.
Develop, define, and manage all subsystem requirements, specifications, and associated engineering documentation.
Act as a consultant and ensure that detailed subassembly requirements derived by internal or external teams are mutually compatible and well-formed.
Develop and maintain documentation and artifacts for subsystem verification and validation, including risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
Guide technical decisions across the product lifecycle, from design through integration, to ensure the on-time delivery of laser subsystems.
Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Skills
Minimum 8 years of professional experience (or 6+ years with Master's, or 5+ years with PhD).
Minimum 6 years of experience in laser system hardware design, integration, and product development.
Minimum 2 years of systems engineering experience.
Expertise in laser systems, including fiber optic components.
Experience with electro-optic and acousto-optic modulators.
Experience with noise-reduction servos.
Nice-to-have Skills
Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
Proven experience in system engineering or system architecture of highly complex laser systems.
Strong background in requirements engineering, system verification, and validation processes.
Familiarity with Model Based System Engineering (MBSE).
Prior experience with laser-cooled, neutral atom, atomic ion apparatus, or quantum computers.
Proficiency in system modeling, simulations, and analysis tools.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
