This role is for a Lead Experimental Physicist focusing on cutting-edge research and development in quantum computing. The physicist will lead teams of scientists and engineers in developing and operating devices designed for manipulating quantum systems like qubits or trapped neutral atoms/ions. Key duties involve conducting experiments, analyzing results, performing design studies, and presenting scientific findings aligned with broader company strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct hands-on experimental work within a research lab environment to collect data on the performance of various hardware prototypes and methods.
Review scientific results, identify necessary improvements, and implement enhanced processes and future investigation directions.
Perform detailed design trade studies and comprehensive analyses to inform decisions.
Present scientific results to internal teams, at external conferences, and through publications.
Develop project plans, schedules, and budgets that align with the broader company strategy.
Required Skills
Completion of a PhD prior to the start date.
Minimum of 8 years of experience (including PhD) in quantum computing, quantum information, atomic physics, laser and optics design, experimental control system development, or electronics design.
Experience leading cross-functional technical teams to deliver complex, high-impact projects.
Must meet the requirements of being a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, or worker granted asylum/refugee status).
Nice-to-have Skills
Over 10 years of experience in scientific research and development, engineering, or leadership roles.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Experience with laser cooling and trapping of ions or neutral atoms.
Experience performing simulation and modeling to inform design and experiments.
Experience with laser systems, including frequency-stabilized diode lasers, optical cavities, and phase or intensity feedback loops.
Experience with cryogenic systems and ultra-high vacuum systems.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with published results in their field of research.
