This Experimental Physicist role focuses on developing, integrating, and operating quantum computing systems utilizing trapped ions as qubits. The position requires significant hands-on experience building and operating specialized devices using advanced laboratory techniques like laser spectroscopy and low noise electronics. Responsibilities include characterizing device performance, conducting design analysis, and collaborating closely with engineering teams to deploy new concepts. The physicist is also expected to be a thought leader, publishing research findings and presenting at scientific conferences.
Key Responsibilities
Apply previous experimental research experience to design, develop, verify, and deploy trapped ion quantum computers.
Work alongside teams of scientists and engineers to transform new concepts into reality.
Collect data on system performance and characterize device characteristics within a research lab environment.
Conduct design trade studies and performance analysis.
Present scientific results to peers at conferences or through publications.
Required Skills
Must have completed a PhD prior to starting the position.
Minimum 4+ years’ experience (including PhD time) in quantum information, qubits, atomic physics, precision spectroscopy, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, cryogenics, or laser systems.
Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, or granted asylum/refugee status).
Must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen.
Nice-to-have Skills
Experience with the design or operation of a device for quantum information processing.
Experience with laser cooling and trapping of ions or neutral atoms.
Experience performing simulation and modeling to inform experiments.
Experience programming experimental control systems for data collection, signal processing, and data analysis.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including published results within the field of research.
Experience in post-doctoral research positions or other mentorship positions.
Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills.
