This role involves ensuring the reliable operation and seamless integration of Lucy, Europe's first large-scale photonic quantum computer, which is coupled directly with the Joliot-Curie supercomputer at the CEA's TGCC site. The engineer will manage the full QPU lifecycle, including performing daily monitoring, automating system checks, and diagnosing complex integration issues related to system performance. A key aspect of the job is providing essential user support and maintaining structured documentation to enable researchers to interact effectively with the quantum infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Perform daily health checks and predefined test protocols across Lucy's modules, collecting logs and documenting anomalies.
Develop Python and Linux scripts to automate reliability tasks, including generating alerts, parsing logs, and building simple monitoring dashboards.
Diagnose complex integration issues related to system uptime, gate fidelity, error rates, and response times, ensuring clear visibility to stakeholders.
Provide direct support to researchers by managing access, handling tickets, and maintaining comprehensive documentation for HPC workflows.
Act as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for TGCC/HLST, ensuring compliance with reporting standards and operational continuity.
Required Skills
Advanced proficiency in Python and Linux for scripting, automation, and troubleshooting in a production environment.
Experience in operational reliability, including running system checks, interpreting logs, and documenting clear escalations.
Strong diagnostic mindset to trace and isolate issues across complex system chains (OS, network, scheduler, system-side).
Excellent communication and structured documentation skills for collaboration with researchers and infrastructure teams.
Professional fluency in English and conversational fluency in French.
Master's degree or engineering school background in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or related fields.
Nice-to-have Skills
Basic understanding of HPC concepts, including job schedulers (Slurm or similar), batch workflows, and cluster constraints.
System integration mindset for testing interfaces, verifying service behavior, and resolving communication issues with infrastructure teams.
Ability to identify recurring issues and propose durable fixes (continuous improvement mindset).
Experience with high-level research institutions or datacenter operations (e.g., EuroHPC, CNRS, CERN, Tier-1 ops).
Previous involvement in hybrid High-Performance Computing and Quantum projects.
