This role is for a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and evolution of the backend and web systems for the Quantum Architecture platform. This platform supports the simulation and study of fault-tolerant photonic quantum computer architectures. The engineer will utilize deep expertise in Python, distributed systems, and web architecture to build robust infrastructure for scientific and computational workflows, working closely with physicists and researchers.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the redesign of the core architecture platform backend by defining clear Python service boundaries and APIs to ensure data and UI layers remain decoupled.
Develop robust Python pipelines to manage jobs, configurations, and artifacts across on-premise, HPC, and cloud environments, ensuring reproducibility.
Manage the database and caching strategy, including schema design, migrations, indexing, and state layers for long-running experiments.
Implement and operate AWS infrastructure using Terraform, integrate authentication systems, and ensure operational clarity through logging and metrics.
Create internal tooling, such as CLIs, APIs, and Python SDKs, along with documentation to help researchers launch, observe, and compare simulations.
Improve engineering standards by implementing typed Python, thorough testing, CI/CD processes, and mentoring peers on platform design and performance tuning.
Required Skills
8+ years building backend and platform systems in Python, including leading significant re-architecture efforts.
Expert-level Python programming (async, packaging, profiling) with production experience in FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
Production experience with typed interface patterns like pydantic or mypy.
Demonstrated success shipping reproducible pipelines or workflow engines spanning HPC/Slurm and cloud infrastructure.
Deep AWS and Terraform experience across multi-environment deployments, including wiring authentication layers and managing secrets.
Strong background in database systems (Postgres, MySQL, Mongo) and state systems (Redis, Valkey), covering schema design, migrations, and optimization.
History of designing and maintaining internal APIs and SDKs (REST/gRPC/Python clients) with clear contracts, versioning, and documentation practices.
Nice-to-have Skills
Experience building platforms that serve research-heavy or experiment-driven teams, where complex workflows and long-running jobs require clear interfaces and repeatable execution.
