The primary responsibility is to develop photonic interconnects testbeds for quantum computing. This involves leading small research teams, investigating new optical designs, and conducting hardware tests to advance IonQ's quantum computing technology.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and execute trapped ion physics experiments, applying a core understanding of laser-atom interactions.
Lead small research teams in early-stage investigation of new optical designs, hardware testing, and experiments to advance IonQ quantum computing.
Serve as a photonic interconnects expert on cross-functional teams to advance PIC-based light delivery for generating single photons from trapped ions.
Collaborate with software and engineering staff to incorporate system control and automation into projects.
Deliver high-quality work and communicate regularly with project management to ensure timely project completion.
Required Skills
MS/PhD in experimental physics or a related field, with graduate-level experience in ion trapping.
8+ years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and/or PIC-based light delivery systems.
Deep understanding of atomic and trapped ion physics.
Experience with design-of-experiment and control of complex laser and optical systems.
Prior experience leading small teams of researchers/engineers.
Demonstrated experimental experience with quantum computing, quantum networks, or atomic physics systems.
Nice-to-have Skills
5+ years of experience with bringing up and running ion trapping experiments.
Experience in physics simulations of trapped ion quantum systems, such as QuTiP.
Experience in fiberized packaging of PIC devices.
Experience using the Artiq or similar framework to control quantum hardware.
Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product.
