This Staff Engineer role is crucial for managing the fabrication of IonQ's ion traps and other microdevices through external US and international foundries. The engineer will lead vendor partnerships, coordinate technical specifications across internal teams (design, test, packaging), and manage external foundry priorities to align with overall company needs. Key responsibilities include writing statements of work, analyzing in-line metrology data, and actively addressing technical and schedule risks. The goal is to ensure the timely and high-fidelity delivery of working, fully processed quantum devices.
Key Responsibilities
Manage external custom device development with domestic and international foundries, including reviewing lot status and production travelers.
Write statements of work and support procurement and contract negotiations for engagement with critical vendors.
Coordinate cross-functionally within IonQ to gather and communicate specifications, risk mitigation strategies, and complex interdependencies to foundry partners.
Propose and implement short loop plans to mitigate technical and schedule risks, ensuring the timely delivery of fully processed devices.
Analyze in-line metrology data to assess device conformance and assist in root cause failure analysis of microfabricated devices internally and externally.
Monitor project performance to understand impacts to cost, schedule, and technical capability, and actively address development issues.
Required Skills
Master's degree or higher in Engineering or a relevant field.
Over 3 years of management experience in R&D, New Product Introduction (NPI), or low-volume manufacturing of semiconductor devices using commercial foundry processes.
Over 10 years experience developing and delivering novel devices using custom CMOS or MEMS semiconductor devices.
Experience in foundry process development, characterization, and transfer to production.
Expertise in novel microfabrication development and qualification.
Strong leadership and project management skills to drive cross-functional collaboration over multiple time zones.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences.
Nice-to-have Skills
Expertise in the fabrication of control electronics, photonics, or ion traps.
Experience with data aggregation and statistical analysis/reporting.
Experience utilizing Jira, Smartsheet, or similar tools for project management.
