  • Employment for US technical jobs is contingent on verifying "U.S. Person" status (U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee) due to U.S. export control and government contract restrictions.
  • For candidates who are not U.S. Persons, employment for US technical jobs may proceed if IonQ obtains any necessary license or confirms a license exception under U.S. export controls.
  • The position may be located onsite or hybrid in offices outside the US (Toronto, Canada; Gothenburg, Sweden) or fully remote in the US.

The Senior Scientist for Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms is a technical expert tasked with developing next-generation quantum solutions using IonQ’s trapped-ion quantum computers. This role focuses on creating fault-tolerant algorithms poised to surpass classical methods, developing core intellectual property, and establishing computational resource models. The scientist must also collaborate with internal and external partners to define problems and contribute to multi-year initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Develop fault-tolerant quantum solutions that create large scientific and commercial impact across a wide range of industry verticals.

Work within a client-facing team to identify, define, and solve real-world problems using IonQ trapped-ion quantum computers.

Contribute technical expertise by comparing Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (FTQC) algorithms against NISQ algorithms and classical High-Performance Computing (HPC) methods.

Discover foundational intellectual property (IP) and publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Develop computational resource models, long-term roadmaps, and complete end-to-end quantum workflows.

Required Skills

Six or more years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Documented expertise in Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (FTQC) algorithms focused on achieving end-customer value at large scales (millions of qubits).

Proven track record of domain expertise in fault-tolerant quantum computing, demonstrated through invited talks, publications, or patents.

Experience contributing to the FTQC algorithm ecosystem, including the development of tools, metrics, and community standards.

Experience optimizing algorithm performance (accuracy and time-to-solution) using theoretical equations and engineering optimization.

Experience working effectively as part of a team to solve real-world problems with excellent communication skills.

Nice-to-have Skills

Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, or a related field.

Experience supporting the writing and execution of government contracts.

Demonstrated expertise in C++, Python, Qiskit, or a similar quantum SDK.

Demonstrated experience benchmarking quantum algorithms using varied metrics.

Success working directly with customers to define and deliver solutions.

Experience developing hybrid end-to-end solutions in a production or cloud environment, including knowledge of CI/CD.
