  • Employment is contingent upon verifying "U.S. Person" status (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, refugee, or granted asylum) due to U.S. export control and government contract restrictions.
  • If the candidate does not confirm U.S. Person status, IonQ may decline to proceed with the application if a necessary license or license exception cannot be confirmed or obtained.

This senior individual contributor role at IonQ requires a Principal Researcher and Technical Program Manager to lead the strategy, research, and execution of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Secure Quantum Networking initiatives. The successful candidate will define the technical roadmap for secure quantum communication systems, leveraging deep expertise across hardware, software, and systems architecture. Key goals include leading multidisciplinary research and collaborating with global partners to transition QKD technologies from prototypes into practical, deployable real-world solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Define and own the technical vision and roadmap for IonQ’s Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Secure Quantum Networking strategy.

Lead multidisciplinary research and engineering initiatives across quantum hardware, control systems, and cryptographic software.

Architect and validate QKD systems, including entanglement-based schemes, and manage integration with classical networks.

Collaborate with government, defense, and financial partners to design and execute pilot deployments for secure quantum communication.

Serve as principal investigator for funded programs, managing deliverables, timelines, and technical milestones across the global research ecosystem.

Represent the company in standards bodies and policy forums to influence the evolution of quantum network interoperability standards.

Required Skills

Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field specializing in Quantum Communication, Photonics, or Cryptography.

18+ years of research or technical program experience in quantum communication, network systems, or applied cryptography.

Proven expertise in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols (BB84, E91, CV-QKD, entanglement-based systems) and quantum network architectures.

Deep knowledge of quantum optics, entanglement distribution, and photonic integration.

Hands-on experience with quantum hardware and control systems, including photon sources, detectors, and synchronization.

Familiarity with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and hybrid cryptographic integration.

Strong understanding of program management in a research environment, including proposal development and milestone tracking.

Nice-to-have Skills

Prior experience leading national or international Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) programs.

Experience serving as technical lead on DARPA, NSF, or DOE-funded projects.

Participation in ETSI, ITU-T, or NIST quantum communication working groups.

Demonstrated record of patents, publications, and technology transfer in quantum communication or secure networking.
