This role seeks a Principal Computer Systems Researcher to define the hardware and controls architecture for next-generation quantum computers at Atom Computing. The researcher will align the technology roadmap with commercial demands, design scalable control systems, and manage critical trade-offs involving software, FPGA, and custom ASIC solutions. This position requires applying systems engineering methodologies and translating deep understanding of quantum control flow into high-performance hardware designs to advance the company's product roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
Define and evolve the hardware and controls architecture for next-generation quantum computing systems.
Design scalable control architectures by making critical trade-offs between software, FPGA, and custom ASIC solutions.
Align the internal technology roadmap with commercial trends and manage risks using systems engineering methodologies.
Translate insights regarding quantum control flow and access patterns into performant hardware designs.
Implement software or firmware solutions as required to de-risk the proposed technical roadmap.
Collaborate with quantum physicists, optical engineers, and hardware engineers to ensure infrastructure meets use case requirements.
Required Skills
PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
7+ years of post-degree experience building complex systems.
Proficiency in software development using C++, Python, Rust, or Go.
Experience with FPGA design using VHDL or Verilog.
Proven ability to design and build complex computer systems that advance beyond the current state of the art.
Strong communication skills demonstrated through technical presentations, publications, or collaborative research.
Nice-to-have Skills
Knowledge of computer architecture.
Knowledge of signal processing.
Knowledge of algorithm development.
Knowledge of quantum error correction.
