The engineer translates complex scientific requirements from physics teams into secure and scalable software implementations, including telemetry systems, instrument servers, and data visualizations. A key focus of this position is ensuring the availability and consistency of the laboratory software infrastructure that supports the experimental physics efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and integrate telemetry systems to enable real-time observability and monitoring of laboratory software and hardware.

Ensure availability and consistency of server-level and instrument-level logs, metrics, and traces.

Partner with science teams to build intuitive and compact visualizations using observability data.

Leverage infrastructure-as-code principles for continuous deployment and improvement of laboratory software systems.

Translate high-level science requirements into performant, scalable, and secure software implementations.

Empower others to actively contribute to the codebase through mentorship and thorough documentation.

Required Skills

5+ years of professional software development experience.

5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.

5+ years of experience leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems.

Experience leading an engineering team or acting as a tech lead or mentor.

Experience with full-stack web development (including client-server architectures and databases).

Experience working with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Grafana).

Experience using infrastructure-as-code to design and deploy cloud services.

Nice-to-have Skills

Experience collaborating with scientists in a research environment.

Familiarity with AWS tools and services (such as CDK).

Experience using standard laboratory test and measurement equipment.

Proficiency in Javascript and React.

Background in experimental physics or quantum computing.

Experience developing or deploying IoT solutions.
